Research

Being primarily an art business, there is a lot of travel that we do that is legitimately a work expense. Being in a new place with camera in hand leads to paintings.  Here are a few travel inspired painting examples.

Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Siem Reap, Cambodia

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Vancouver Island, BC

Rome, Italy

Sometimes I don't have to travel far for research. An upcoming live painting in support of the Rotary Club of High River had me driving just a few minutes southwest of High River to BJ's bison ranch. Heather and I had visited a few days ago, but the bison were out of sight, in a the far northern section of the ranch, completely out of sight. I returned on my own yesterday with a completely different result.

The herd was all gathered, including the mighty bull, a few minutes walk from the house. To make them less intimated by my presence, I laid down in the pasture (on the opposite side of the bison fence for safety) and began looking for potential compositions through my view finder. After a few minutes, they seemed very relaxed and one even came within a few feet of me.

Here are a few of the shots that might turn into the source for my live painting later on in June.

Heather, Coco, Shay and I will travel north in August exploring northern BC, Yukon and maybe even a little of Alaska. It will be an epic driving adventure that we'll happily call "research". I can't wait to see what emerges in terms of future paintings.
