The Reason

THE REASON Christmas concert has become part of my holiday tradition.  In fact, the season would not be the same if I wasn't invited to be a small part of the beautiful celebration of song organized by Bev Fawcett and the Hope in Christ Ministries team.

For the second year in a row I attempted to paint and emcee at the same time.  I was unsure of my subject for quite some time, only landing on what I was going to do a few mornings ago.  I stumbled across an image of a wood cut ornament of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus.  It had everything that I was looking for and offered me a chance to try something on more abstract side of the spectrum.

The event featured the Dressed in Red house band, a variety of vocalists and even a guest artist from Edmonton, a sax player called Simply Gabriel.  Some of the performers are regulars - Ronald, Leona, Sherry-Lynn, Keith and Tina for example, others are new - Charlee, Jeffery and Bev to mention a few.  My role was to keep the program rolling, have some fun with the audience, and provide an artistic distraction down stage left.

Whenever I do these live painting fundraisers, there is an element of challenge.  Having to produce a saleable piece of work within a constricted time window is tough.  Light, air quality, and the number of interruptions all factored into last night's creative adventure.  It proved to be incredibly dry in Keyano Theatre and the paint was behaving very differently from in Birdsong Studio.  The light was pretty good, but as it was a live entertainment event, the spill from various coloured light sources added another layer of challenge to the experience.  In the end, I managed to get the piece to the place of being nearly finished.  As is the case with all the live paintings that I do, I will take the painting into the studio to "clean it up", as I call it, and apply the finishing touches.

There was a lively auction for the painting last night.  It ended up raising $2,000 for charity thanks to Steve and Trish Yatauro.  They are heading off to the States for the Christmas season soon, so I will be able to present them with the finished portrait in the New Year.

If anyone is interested in getting a canvas print of this year's painting from THE REASON, here are your size choices:

12" x 18" - $150

16" x 24" - $175

20" x 30" - $200

24" x 36" - $250

All prices include a canvas print on 1.5" stretcher bars, delivery and tax. To order one, send an email to office@birdsongconnections.com with THE REASON in the subject line.  My wife Heather manages all the orders and the payment process.

My deepest thanks to Bev for letting me back on the stage again this year.  She places her faith in me and I truly appreciate it.  Thanks to everyone who came out to experience the spirit, and the reason for the season.

Merry Christmas!
